Sewage and Overflows quote in Cicero
Tell us what the water is doing, whether it has stopped and whose home it is. A person reads every request and matches it to a licensed, insured plumber for the part that cannot wait. We cannot promise how soon a request sent at night is read, so close the main shutoff first.

The county sewer route for a Cicero backup

Onondaga County WEP asks residents with sewage backing up to call 315-435-3157, which it answers at any time, every day, for properties connected to the public sewer inside the Consolidated Sanitary District. For City of Syracuse properties it directs the call to the City Department of Public Works on 315-448-CITY, 315-448-2489, and outside the district to the town or village, usually its DPW. Properties not on public sewer are told to contact a licensed plumber or service expert.

The Water exclusion in the ISO HO 00 03 05 11 form removes coverage for water which backs up through sewers or drains, or which overflows or is otherwise discharged from a sump, sump pump or related equipment, and for flood and surface water. The 2011 wording adds that the exclusion applies regardless of whether the water is caused by an act of nature or is otherwise caused. For the plumbing and freezing provisions the form also states that a plumbing system does not include a sump, sump pump or related equipment.

First steps at a Cicero backup
Dirty water is rising at a Cicero floor drain or toilet. Stop using water throughout the house. The Town of Cicero is in the county's Consolidated Sanitary District, so WEP takes backup calls at any hour on 315-435-3157 and checks the public side first.

After the WEP check in Cicero
If the public side is clear, a licensed plumber finds and clears the blockage in the house drain. Before cleanup, photograph how high the water reached; the standard homeowners form excludes backup through sewers or drains unless an endorsement was added.

Cicero backup question
Is a single overflowing toilet an emergency?
Usually not, if it clears with a plunger. Close the valve behind it and watch. Rising water at a floor drain is different.
